Combat Decision Fatigue in Your Business with These 6 Tips
Combat Decision Fatigue with These 6 Tips
Introduction Section
Experienced business owners know how important it is to combat decision fatigue.
Last month I wrote a blog about the impact of decision fatigue, the causes, the symptoms, and the outcomes. This month I’d like to provide you with a few tools and strategies to combat it.
How to Combat Decision Fatigue
As a business owner, you have probably suffered from decision fatigue at one time or another. Fortunately, you don’t have to succumb to its effects, or make desperate or sporadic decisions because of it.
Here’s how you can fight back:
Get Plenty of Sleep
I start with this one because getting a good night’s rest is the best way to recharge your mental and physical battery. With eight or nine hours of sleep under your belt, you will be well equipped to think through complex situations and make the best decisions you can.
Make big decisions first thing in the morning
Researchers have found that most people make their most accurate, thoughtful decisions first thing in the morning. This is true whether you are a self-proclaimed morning person or a night owl. As the day goes on, our decisions get riskier as we approach a plateau or even burnout.
Plan Ahead
Simplifying other, less critical decisions can sometimes help alleviate the stress of making the bigger decisions. For example, plan your meals ahead of time, automate your bills, create to-do or shopping lists, and choose the next day’s clothes each night. Planning, so you have fewer decisions to make the next day, can conserve your mental energy for the more complicated decisions.
Take Breaks
Step away from the looming decision if you have a chance and clear your head. Take a walk, grab a coffee, or slip in a quick power nap to recharge your mind. A short break might be just what you need to feel refreshed.
Space Out Your Decisions
If you are working on a big project, don’t leave all the major decisions to the end. You might feel rushed to wrap things up or meet deadlines, which may cause you to make rash decisions. Instead of forcing a decision in the heat of the moment, set mini deadlines for yourself so you can spread the bigger decisions out.
Delegate Your Decisions
Think about all the decisions you must make at home and at work. Is there someone who can handle those decisions for you? This could be an employee for work decisions, or a family member or friend for decisions at home. Choosing to delegate decisions reduces the number you have to make in a day, and lets you focus on the ones that are most important.
How an Online Business Manager Can Help
If you have more decisions to make than you can handle, an Online Business Manager is the perfect position to delegate to. An Online Business Manager is someone who handles your day-to-day challenges and can be trusted to make the necessary decisions to move your business forward.
